Celebrity Millenium Millennium is ... pretty. That's not a word used very often when discussing seagoing vessels, but it's the simplest and most accurate word to describe Millennium. The soft hues and stately public spaces; the tortoise-shell onyx stairway at the center of the ship; the diverse art around every turn; the stunning space in the Cosmos Lounge with its wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows, contemporary design, glittery dance floor, Art Deco-style lighting system and light woods; the clubby, homey feeling of Michael's Club; and the contemporary-mixed-with-Deco design of the Metropolitan Restaurant offer an eclectic experience, but all of it is soft ... and pretty. One might imagine it's impossible to feel so at home on a ship this large -- at 91,000 tons, it carries 1,950 passengers. Somehow, though, the feeling of an intimate experience prevails. The layout and accessibility are excellent, with 14 elevators and a design that makes getting from one point of interest to another easy and enjoyable. Lots of outside deck space and promenades help in this regard, as well. Celebrity's designers deserve an ovation for their ingenious fusion of contemporary, Old World, Art Deco and chic resort influences. The highlight is the central atrium with glorious amounts of natural light on the edges and a stunning white onyx stairway down the center. The translucent staircase glows with internal yellow neon light and is lined with three-story-high mahogany pillars surrounded by long golden flowing curtains. Altogether, the combination is a visual delight. The spas simply have to be seen to be believed—they occupy nearly as much space inside as is devoted to the adjacent outdoor Lido Deck pool area. Although the spas offer just about any treatment you can think of—and some you probably haven't—they also house a complimentary hydrotherapy pool and café. These ships have a lot to offer families, with some of the most expansive children's facilities in the Celebrity fleet. The formal two-deck restaurant serves open-seating breakfast and lunch; evening meals are served in two traditional assigned seating or an open-seating option that allows you to be seated any time the main restaurant is open. The casual Lido buffet offers breakfast and lunch. For dinner, it has made-to-order entrées, a carving station, and an array of side dishes. The ship features a poolside grill for burgers and other fast-food favorites; the spa café serves lighter fare. A specialty coffee bar also serves teas and pastries for an extra charge. As on all Celebrity ships, cabins are thoughtfully designed, with ample closet and drawer/shelf storage, as well as bathroom shelves in all standard inside and outside categories. Most staterooms and suites have convertible sofa beds, and many categories are capable of accommodating third and fourth occupants. The Carnival Splendor is a big vessel with a huge personality -- and it has already set itself apart in grand style. For starters, Splendor has inaugurated a new cabin category, the spa cabin, which is as much about lifestyle as real estate. A retractable sky dome covers Splendor's pool deck, which is something new for Carnival; it means that passengers can swim when it's balmy -- and when it's not. Splendor is also Carnival's largest ship. Designed to accommodate up to 3,744 passengers, it deserves its own zip code. Remarkably, there is only an occasional sense of overcrowding, and there are plenty of quiet spaces -- like Serenity, the adults-only sun deck -- to seek respite.
One of Splendor's most impressive features is its luxurious, 21,000-square-foot spa, the most elaborate in the fleet. Pan-Asian in design, the Cloud 9 Spa spans two decks and includes a state-of-the-art fitness center that easily rivals any at sea. Splendor is designed around the theme of "splendid things," a celebration of the magnificent, lustrous and elegant. The center of it all is the atrium. I'm no architect, but when I first walked on board -- and I am not alone in reacting this way -- I felt under assault by a design that I can only describe as overwhelming. Carnival's longtime interiors designer Joe Farcus sees "whimsical" in the massive dining room chandeliers. I see a DNA helix. He sees "drama" and "excitement" in the squiggly pink and black image that appears on tabletops, elevator panels and walls. I see an amoeba. And I've never stayed in a cabin that had bright pink crown molding and a pinkish couch before. Let's just say there is nothing understated about Splendor. Understandably, some passengers have nicknamed it "The Pink Ship."
