Acapulco, Guerrero

What Acapulco undoubtedly has going for it, is its stunning bay: a sweeping scythe-stroke of yellow sand backed by the white towers of the high-rise hotels and, behind them, the green jungle foothills of the Sierra. Even though there are hundreds of thousands of people here throughout the year, most of the big hotels remain nearly full - it rarely seems oppressively crowded. Certainly there's always space to lie somewhere along the beach, partly because of its sheer size, partly because of the number of rival attractions from hotel pools to parasailing and "romantic" cruises.

By day, if people aren't at the beach or asleep, they're mostly shopping. If you only do one thing in Acapulco, though, make sure you see its most celebrated spectacle, the leap of the daredevil high divers at La Quebrada. About the only place in Acapulco that gives even the slightest sense of the historic role the city played in Mexico's past is the Acapulco Museum in the old town. It's situated inside the Fuerte de San Diego, an impressive, if heavily restored, star-shaped fort built in 1616 to protect the Manila galleons from foreign corsairs.

Along the Costera, downtown is packed with shops, restaurants and a futuristic discos. It is also home to the Centro Cultural, which has an art gallery, a crafts store and a theatre and also hosts a regular program of cultural events with a regional bias. Geared up for bored kids, the Parque Papagayo on Costera at Playa Hornos, offers boating, roller-skating and fairground rides. Further east round the bay, near the Centro Acapulco, the aquatic park CICI has water-based rides and puts on dolphin shows. Your kids will love it!

San Jose del Cabo, Baja California Sur

The combination of ocean, desert and mountains combine to make Los Cabos an intriguing and beautiful destination. In and around the surrounding area there are many quaint Mexican villages, towns, and points of interest. If you're vacationing on the Baja Peninsula, San Jose del Cabo boasts great beaches. Isla Ixtapa (Isla Grande) offers a series of small beaches connected by secluded paths. Playa Varadero is the main beach. Great seafood, safe waters for swimming and jet skiing and some pretty exotic views.

Horse drawn carriage rides are available through the calm streets. There's a water park next door to the Ixtapa Palace hotel with some very serious water slide action.

Orlando, FL.

Scottsdale, AZ.

More than 7 million people visit Scottsdale each year. You may wonder, what do they do there besides lounge at exquisite resorts, and eat at fine restaurants? Well, the Indian Wash Greenbelt connects four parks: Vista Del Camino, Eldorado, Indian School and Chaparral. The greenbelt is 12 miles long, and is the most popular place in town for inline skaters, as well as joggers, cyclists, walkers, and anyone with a dog. There are sports fields, fishing lakes, tennis courts, and more. If you are a golfer you will find paradise in Scottsdale. There are about 50 golf courses just in Scottsdale. Championship courses of all types can be found here, including the TPC Scottsdale where the Phoenix Open is played each winter as one of the first PGA tournament events of the year. Part of Arizona State University, the Kerr Cultural Center was originally intended as a hall for chamber music. Chamber performances are still held there, as well as other types of musical programs and concerts. This is a smaller venue, making the programs intimate and enjoyable. In central Scottsdale, at the corporate offices of the Fiesta Bowl, you can stop in during the week and visit the Fiesta Bowl Museum. Trophies relating to college football are on display, as are exhibits about the history of the Fiesta Bowl organization, its volunteers and the games. The museum is free. Unique park amenities for the young ones include a lovely carousel. This park is special because of the trains and railroad-related exhibits. A ten minute train ride also takes you through an arboretum located in the park. Scottsdale Trolley Tour 
A two-hour free guided tour on the Scottsdale Trolley where you'll learn about the districts, galleries, restaurants, shopping and history of the downtown Scottsdale area. Old Town Scottsdale 
If it isn't too hot and you like to walk and window shop, forget that traditional mall and make your way to downtown Scottsdale. Here you'll find winding streets full of unique shops and galleries. You may also hear this area referred to as Fifth Avenue Shops. At Parada del Sol Rodeop professional cowboys from allover the country converge on north Scottsdale for the Parada del Sol Rodeo. The Rodeo is a culmination of various Scottsdale events sponsored by the Scottsdale Jaycees, including the Parada del Sol Parade. Scottsdale ArtWalk, every Thursday night you can stroll the streets of downtown Scottsdale and enjoy special exhibits with artists' receptions, demonstrations and more. The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art is in the same complex.

Lake Placid, NY.

Because Lake Placid is known for its outdoor activities and Olympic history, some people might think that you have to be an athlete or a real "outdoorsy type" to enjoy it. But Lake Placid has so much to offer everyone, whether you're "outdoorsy" or not! Are you a history buff? Visit the John Brown Farm State Historic Site, located just outside Lake Placid, and step back in time. His house and barn have been preserved and some of the original furnishings are still there. The Lake Placid Center for the Arts will treat you to performances of all kinds of music, independent films, dance troupes, and shows put on by local artists. It's open all year-round, and they even serve refreshments!

Of course, the Olympic Center Museum is a must-see when you're in Lake Placid. Explore exhibits from both the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, with video highlights, athletes' memorabilia, and lots of history.

If you're looking for adventurous things to do, High Peaks Mountain Adventures will have whatever you're looking for in every season. They can take you ice climbing, back country skiing and snowshoeing, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking ... whew, I'm getting tired just thinking about all of these things to do!

Oranjestad

Aruba's charming capital is best explored on foot. Its palm-lined central thoroughfare runs between old and new pastel-painted buildings of typical Dutch design (Spanish influence is also evident in some of the architecture). The town is named after the Dutch royal house of Oranje, and has been the island's capital since 1797.

Oranjestad attracts more shoppers than sightseers. There are many malls with boutiques and shops in Oranjestad; downtown and Seaport Village are the major shopping areas. Every morning the wharf teems with activity as merchants sell produce and fresh fish - often right off their boats. You can also buy Aruban handicrafts and T-shirts at this dockside bazaar, where bargaining is expected and dollars or florins are accepted. Island schooners and houseboats anchored near the fishing boats add to the port's ambience. Wilhelmina Park, a small tropical garden on the waterfront along L.G. Smith Boulevard, has a sculpture of the Netherlands' Queen Wilhelmina, whose reign lasted from 1890 to 1948. Lloyd G. Smith Blvd. becomes awfully crowded with tourists during cruise ship arrivals, but the street is well prepared for the influx. Dozens of shops line the thoroughfare. The Seaport Village Mall, on the north side of the street, and the Seaport Marketplace, on the east side of the yacht basin section of the harbor, contain the best of the chichi shops, as well as small cafes.

Caya G. F. Betico Croes, or Main Street, runs roughly parallel to the waterfront several blocks inland. It's another major shopping venue. If you are looking for a little culture, Oranjestad has a handful of museums and houses of worship that are worth a bit of your time.
